Undertaken during the summer/autumn of 2008, this project for the University was the 3rd contract undertaken by Ibex in the previous 18 months It followed on from the projects to refurbish Kimberlin Library and the Queens Building, both successfully completed for the University.
The Eric Wood building was to be refurbished to provide additional student facilities from the adjoining Kimberlin Library as well as administrative space on the upper 2 floors. The building remained occupied on these upper floors during the refurbishment process.
The works comprised 2 distinct areas of work.
Externally new windows were provided to all elevations at all levels and additionally, a new entrance canopy was provided after the re-configuration of the existing entrance, complete with ramps and foundations. New services plant was located on the roof to facilitate the new services installations to the 3 floor levels. The new entrance formed was finished with specially manufactured glass blocks procure under a 13 week procurement period, making it a key and critical consideration on the project
Within the building a substantial demolition and strip out exercise was undertaken to remove all existing installations and finishings back to the structure. From that point, new services were installed, together with a new grid and ceiling tile arrangement. Within the feature internal entrance reception the ceilings were constructed with plasterboards with specialist lighting to create a modern environment.
New partitions were built to accommodate storage areas on trhe ground floor, whilst on the upper fllors partitions were re-built in part and in full, to accommodate the new installations after fit-out.
